Portfolio 1 - The Big Penguin

The Barrel

So, I started off the unit by using Blender to model and texture a barrel.

I did not follow the tutorial the rest of the class was following, but I assume I made a pretty fine barrel regardless (credit to this wood texture set and this metal texture set).

The Big Penguin

For my next piece, I decided to model the so called "Big Penguin" from the town of Penguin, sandwiched between Burnie and Devonport.

I chose to model the Big Penguin for my first portfolio task for the unit basically because it just stood out to me as something fun and silly to recreate.

A few renders of my Big Penguin recreation

The model shown here was built from a basic cube up. It's rendered here with some textural and geometric noise to give the impression it was sculpted, much like the original penguin. Under the hood, it looks a little different.

Here you can see both what the underlying mesh looks like, and then what the mesh looks like smoothed out underneath using an automatic feature of Blender's (the subdivision surface modifier).
